The commune of Tourettes-sur-Loup looks out towards the Loup basin and the pays de Vence, and rises from the Loup riverbed some considerable height up to the Puy de Tourrettes and the Pic de Courmettes. This vast, not particularly built-up area stands on a limestone base resulting from old undersea deposits and erosion. There is one unusual geological feature: Les Lauves, the outcrop of bare rock on the outskirts of the village. Numerous archaeological sites have been identified, which show the different types of settlement pattern between Prehistoric times and the Middle Ages. We know that in the past the entire territory was inhabited and farmed as is evident from the old agricultural lands of Les Courmettes and Les Caires. On the high ground, the sheepfolds and dry stone huts recall the commune’s pastoral past. The village of Tourrettes is medieval in origin and what makes it particularly interesting is that it is a promontory fort. The houses are grouped around the feudal lord’ s castle and a half-moon shaped street, stand on the rock outcrop. The picturesque village and surrounding area has attracted visitors and famous figures from the world of the arts including the painter Amedeo Modigliani, the composer Francis Poulenc, the poet Jacques Prévert, the philosopher Lanza Del Vasto and the filmmaker Marcel Carné who filmed the Visiteurs du soir here. It was known for a while as the “ Constantine of Provence ” because of its rocky setting and the aloes and prickly pears that grow here, but since the late nineteenth century Tourrettes-sur-Loup has been reputed for its violet farming and the violet festival that takes place here every March. To find out about violet farming and what violets are used for, visit the ‘bastide aux violettes’, the house of violets, which has a magnificent view of the Lauves from its gardens. Afterwards, why not take a stroll in the charming streets of the old village?
